2023 Witches Night Out Witches Hat Contest Winners!

Double, double toil and trouble. Fire burn and Caldron bubble. These hat makers are no beginners. Let's announce our contest winners!

Congratulations to our top 3  winners. This year our top three winners were all hats that were made from scratch!  We had so many wonderful entries that we had to share the honorable mentions here as well. Thank you to all who participated, the judges loved reading and seeing your beautiful entries. This year we had the pleasure of seeing so much creativity and passion behind the hats. Your stories of your inspiration behind your hats inspired US! This year we were graced with entries by a retired teacher, a current teacher, and a crochet artist. Someone honored their grandmother with their hat made from her quilt and we also had a comedian who was a "sand-witch"!  Lots of fun! We hope you enjoy checking out these amazing entries as much as we did.

1st place – Sanjani R. - “I’m an avid crocheter and crochet customized pieces. As a first time attendee to WNO I thought of course I’ll be “Stitch Witch”. My hat is handmade crocheted using black and purple yarns. Every Witch has her familiar and mine is my beautiful cat named Magic. I crocheted him too, and secured him to my hat so he is always with me. His little witch hat has our magic broom. I added other decorative touches every Witch might enjoy. I had a lot of fun crocheting my hat and hope my fellow Witches at WNO enjoy it too.”

2nd Place – Carol W. -  “I loved the TV show H.R. Pufnstuf when I was a kid, and my first thought was to take inspiration from Witchiepoo. When I started looking for inspo pictures, though, I fell in love with the double-coned hat that Boss Witch wore (picture attached). I started working on a pattern based on that hat, but I wanted mine to be more whimsical. I see myself as more of a good witch lol. So I added the glitter, crown, florals, and LED lights to bring in my own personality on top of the nostalgic element.”

3rd Place – Stephanie J. - “The hat is completely handmade and designed by me. There was no template used and it was completely designed from my own imagination. It is called “butterfly effect” and shows hand painted butterflies lifting off the hat with a large moon patterned bow. Also my favorite part is the lit up underside. It is meant to look like stars. I had to make several layers on the hat to make sure they looked like sparkling stars. I hope you enjoy seeing a completely original witches hat never seen before. It was hard to make but I’m happy with the results.”

Honorable Mentions

Sarah G. - “This witch is looking to find some love by casting love spells. I will use whatever forces necessary to find the love within.”

Estella K.S. - “This hat is decorated with a few ingredients for wicked witch spells…the raven feathers drive our brooms to take flight, red flowers add a deceitful charm, the dangling red heart for a powerful troubled laughter and the black berries to blacken the heart! ;-)
Double, Double, toil and trouble; fire burn and cauldron bubble!”

Darla W. - “For several years I've been involved with a group of creative women who design and create custom clothing for children (and their families) who are visiting the Orlando area theme parks on a "Make-A-Wish Trip". We provide a specially chosen wish child's family with clothing, crafts, activities, etc, all custom made by designers and seamstresses all over the country. Many times I've wished for the powers of Flora, Fauna, Merryweather, and the Fairy Godmother! That would make it so simple to "make it pink" or "make it blue" :-) After all, those fairies do have some witchy powers.  My hat is in recognition of those women with whom I've collaborated, and in honor of the "Wish" children who have been blessed by our collective works.”

Michelle D. - “Update to Alice in wonderland theme painting the roses purple. Hat sewn from scratch, added lights, decorations and hand stitched the lace to the brim.”

Kristin M.
- “I am excited to enter this year's hat contest! My hat was inspired by thoughts of a witch who has made friends with all of the forest creatures. Even the creepy ones, such as flowers that are keeping an eye on things!”

Jessica M. - “I’ll be attending WNO with my friends so the inspiration for this hat is: Birds of a “feather” flock together!”

Marqui M. - “I am so excited to be attending Witches Night Out in downtown Livermore & even more excited to be entering into the Witches Hat contest! My inspiration was to do something special with one of my grandma’s quilts! The last witch hat that I made, I wore for 12 years and I am sure this one will last a lifetime!”

Joann J. - “I’m a retired teacher who now drives a tractor at a barn so my “Batty Barn Bird Witch Hat” reminds me of the birds at the barn, and it is all in green like the fields that I mow. It also matches my green cowboy boots.
Looking forward to walking the streets of Livermore in my boots with two of my besties who happen to be my daughter and my niece.”

Yollotl L. - “This hat is made from scratch from all Dollar Tree materials. Dedication: It is in honor of all teachers who spend their money on school supplies to make learning more fun.”

Cindy K. - “Happy Haunting!! Bones, Bones and Rat Bones!! Perfect for my Witches Brew!! Would you care for some Candy Corn? I Love to Decorate! My Hat has many fun things on it from all the Spells I made!!”

Carrie G. - “I will be dressing as a Sand"Witch" Artist at Witches Night Out. Here are some pics of what I will be wearing, including my witch hat/work visor combo, complete with "Subway: Eat Flesh" motif. Please let me know what you think! I'm also a comedian so I decided to go with a fun, funny look.”

Morgan F. - “My inspiration for my witches hat is what I imagine a dark forest witch would wear. I wanted the hat base to different than the typical circle brim and pointy tip witched hat. I found this wonderful tiered and curly black hat which was perfect. Next was to add elements onto the hat like the it was growing moss and plants while it's been in the forest. You can see the purple mushroom, eyeball black rose, venus fly traps, and plenty of moss and leaves that I have attached. I also added a gold and silver tone chain and pendants to the side for some glitzy flair. I hope you like my design and I am so excited to wear it on witches night out this year.”
